What to visit in Varna and Bulgaria
Sites and venues, which can be enjoyed in and around the Golden Sands resort
close proximity to the city of Varna, and yet is nested within a natural park and forest, and right by the spectacular 3.5 kilometer long and amazingly wide beach with golden fine sand.
Because it is located only 17 kilometers away from the capital city of the Bulgarian Black Sea – Varna, the Golden Sands resort is easy to get to either via the regular bus transportation available, or for those who prefer to be more independent by car rented from a local rent-a-car company.
The guests of this wonderful Black Sea resort, who chose to rent a car for their visit, can easily drive themselves to the wide variety of nearby natural, cultural and historic sites worth seeing.
One of the historic and cultural venues worth visiting is the “Holy trinity” Aladja monastery located only 3 kilometers away from the Golden Sands resort. It was built back in the 12th century in the caves, and during the 20th century was declared a Bulgarian National Heritage site. The unique cave monastery can be reached by walking or with a rental car.
Another historic site which is definitely worth visiting is the “Roman Thermae” ( Roman Thermal Baths) located near the Port of Varna, and recognized as the biggest Roman Baths on the Balkan peninsular. The remains of this unique bath complex built approximately during the 2nd century are living proof of the amazing and insightful knowledge of the people from the Roman Empire. There is evidence of very advanced heating systems and isolation methods which had been used so many centuries ago. There are also unique Roman statues and other interesting archaeological findings from the site which are worth seeing.
For the nature lovers, it should be interesting to know that Golden Sands was established right next to the smallest and yet one of the most magnificent Bulgarian national parks, which has the same name “Golden Sands”. It overflows with unique, protected and rare plants and flowers and wildlife. This park is only 3-4 kilometers from the resort itself, and can be reached via the available tourist lanes, by bicycle or by rental car if guests prefer.
Another exceptional natural site which visitors of Golden Sands shouldn’t miss is the amazing “Stone Forest” located just 17-18 kilometers from Varna. The stunning forest consists of numerous stone columns, formed naturally and looking like they are pinned in the sands. The height of these columns ranges from 5 to 7 meters, and the entire forest is located on an area of about 7 square kilometers.
The Stone forest has been declared a protected natural site, and the stone columns have supposedly started forming into such about 50 million years ago.
